The Economics Network is currently recruiting for the following position:

Student Placement Project Officer

Part-time, up to 2 days a week, suitable for an undergraduate or postgraduate student studying Economics in Bristol.

The employer

The Economics Network is located within the School of Economics, Finance and Management which is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law. The Economics Network was formed in 1999 as one of 24 national Subject Networks that promote high quality learning and teaching practices in their subject communities. Until November 2011, it has been part of the Higher Education Academy.

The role of subject centres is to provide support to university and other HE lecturers in their teaching so as to improve students' learning experience. Each subject centre specialises in a particular discipline or group of disciplines. The Economics Network specialises entirely in supporting economics lecturers and their students. The subject centres support the whole UK, but each is based in a particular university. The Economics Network is based at the University of Bristol.

Job description

The successful placement student would be responsible for developing and maintaining two websites: the Why Study Economics website aimed at school leavers, and the Studying Economics website aimed at undergraduates.

The post will also involve liaising with current and former students to discuss their experiences and helping with focus groups and surveys of current and past students. The post may thus involve some travel (usually on a single-day basis), but not normally more than once per week.

In addition, the person would also gain experience from working in a small team and the flexibility this requires. The Network currently has 4 staff based in its University of Bristol office. Additional responsibilities would include helping with database maintenance and the administration of workshops and other events run by the Economics Network.

Qualifications

The successful student would work with the Economics Network's IT manager and web developer and thus would not require technical web development skills. The person should be studying a single or joint Economics degree. Although the person would not be applying economics directly, he or she would need a familiarity with economics concepts and issues in order to understand the range of teaching and learning issues faced by economics lecturers and their students.

The person will require excellent organisational and communication skills, good all round IT skills, some administrative experience and the ability to work as a member of a team.

Length of the post

The part-time placement (up to 2 days a week) would be for 40 weeks and would begin from the second part of October 2011.

Remuneration

The placement carries a remuneration of £9.06 per hour.

To apply: Please send your CV and covering letter to Inna Pomorina.
CLOSING DATE: 7th October 2011. Interviews will take place on the following week.
